The story began in 1953 in Shawnee, Oklahoma. Founder Troy Smith opened a small root beer stand called Top Hat. Today, Sonic operates over 3,500 locations across 46 U.S. states. While it has experimented with "indoor" versions of its restaurants in colder climates, the brand remains committed to the outdoor drive-in format that made it a household name.
